Summertime is one of the most popular seasons for most people. Children can go outside and enjoy the weather and adults can start thinking about the holiday season. But one thing that is often overlooked is summertime installation. Summertime means more gatherings and outdoor activities, which can put more stress on your plumbing system. While your installation shouldn’t spoil your fun this summer, there are a few tips to keep in mind to keep your system running smoothly.

1. Give your garbage disposal a break

Many fruits and vegetables are at their ripest in summer, so indulgence (or overindulgence) is only natural. However, you shouldn’t let these foods destroy your garbage disposal. Make sure you don’t throw banana peels, melon rinds, corn husks, or other hardy leftovers in the disposal to avoid damage.

2. Check the house for leaks

Long winters and even slightly cold summers can wreak havoc on your plumbing and cause leaks. However, you may not notice them in spring or early summer, especially smaller ones.

Be sure to inspect the following areas:

  • Cones for outdoor use
  • pool area
  • shower heads
  • Pipes under the sinks in the bathroom or in the kitchen
  • Water heater and water softener
  • Plumbing in basement or crawl space
  • Toilets (You can do this by putting food coloring in the tank and flushing it)

3. Find your main water shut-off valve

If you’re not sure how to turn off your water, now is the time. A clogged toilet, burst pipe, or other problem can seriously damage your home if you don’t know where to find that valve.

This valve is either a spoked wheel (often painted red) or a valve that rotates at a 90 degree angle to open or close the water main. Hopefully you never have to use it, but at least you know where it is in an emergency.

4. Test the sump pump

Summer thunderstorms can put your sump pump to the test. To keep your basement dry, you need to make sure your sump pump is in top condition and in working order.

To test your sump pump, go to the swamp and drop a bucket of water in it. Make sure it’s turned on. When the water is in the sump, your pump should turn on automatically. If it doesn’t, or if there is a malfunction, you may need to replace it sooner rather than later.

5. Clean the gutters

Gutter cleaning is not always associated with summer plumbing problems. However, your gutters need to be clean and clear to function properly, especially if you haven’t cleaned them recently. Grab a ladder, clear out all the debris, and you shouldn’t have to worry about leaks in your home or basement due to clogged gutters.
