If regular inspections aren’t part of your gutter maintenance routine, they should be. Inspections help you keep track of the condition of your gutters and prevent minor repairs from turning small issues into big problems. In today’s post, Hinkle Roofing shares a quick guide to inspecting your gutters.

How to check your gutters

When you inspect your gutters, your goal is to determine their condition and then ask your gutter installer to fix any problems you may find. You are not expected to perform repairs yourself. For an inspection, all you need is household appliances that you probably already own and a document to document the find, e.g. B. your phone or a notebook.

  • Examine the gutters from the ground. First, check how your gutters look from the ground. From a low angle you can see bumps, water stains and missing parts. If your gutters are built from 10-foot sections, look for signs of leakage at the joints (the parts where one segment joins another).

  • Watch out for corrosion. Sheet metal gutters become susceptible to corrosion as their outer coating wears away, traces of which are easily visible. If your home is due for new gutters, consider corrosion-resistant materials like copper and aluminum.

  • Watch out for standing water. Gutters should be empty in clear weather. Standing water in the gutters indicates poor drainage that needs to be corrected or corrosion can occur. Standing water and dirt can also invite insects to take up residence in your gutters. To check your gutters for standing water, use an inspection mirror with a telescoping handle, or use a stepladder to climb to the edge of the roof (never onto the roof) to inspect.

What do you do next

If you experience any of the problems described above, call your gutter installer and schedule a repair appointment. You may also want to hire a professional to clean out your gutters if they are full of leaves and debris. Having your gutters serviced at least once a year can ensure years of dependable performance and protection from moisture damage to the outside of your home.
