ABSTRACT:

Preserving damaged concrete monuments is a demanding challenge for contemporary cultural heritage given the multitude of historical concrete monuments from the last century that are prone to permanent damage. In this work we have developed three different cement based formulations to treat the repair of different types of damage affecting these structures i.e. delamination problems and cracks of different sizes. The formulations have been improved with various additives in order to achieve ease of use, good workability of the paste and a suitable setting time according to the specific application. Silica was included in the formulations to improve adhesion to old concrete substrates, while halloysite nanotubes loaded with a corrosion inhibitor were also incorporated into the repair materials in an innovative way to address the problem of steel rebar corrosion. The formulations were characterized using a multi-technique approach that allowed us to get a complete overview of the physicochemical properties of these repair materials. In addition, the adhesion of the formulations to old concrete substrates and the release of the corrosion inhibitor within the cement matrix were investigated. Due to the promising results, the formulations were applied to the war memorial of Torricella Peligna (Italy), which confirms their great potential in the field of monument preservation on a concrete basis.
