What is blistering?

Bubbles occur when moisture or air is trapped under the roofing layers or in the shingles themselves. If the temperature continues to rise outdoors, the pressure in these spots will force the air or moisture to expand. This will make the asphalt weaker and form a bubble on the surface of your roofing material.

In most cases, bubbles are small and harmless. However, there are times when these bubbles allow more moisture in the rainwater to seep below the surface, resulting in more and heavier bubbles. Sooner or later your roof will leak and you’ll have to call out for one Roof replacement.

Blisters are common when excessive heat damages roofing materials. If you don’t have shade to block direct sunlight on a roof, small bubbles can form. Obviously, given the excessive heat we have here in Texas, this is a very common occurrence.

What causes blistering?

  • Trapped moisture combined with excessive heat.
  • Poor quality clapboard
  • Bad installation

How can I prevent blistering?

The best thing you can always do to avoid blistering is to choose good quality asphalt shingles when building a new roof. Making good choices will go a long way in preventing blisters, as good shingles can be durable enough to at least prevent blistering. If the steam contracts or the moisture evaporates, the bubbles should simply go away without actually damaging the roof.

However, if you have stains like this on your roof, it is absolutely best to hire a reputable roofing company to do an inspection. Blisters that are larger can cause damage including leaks and allow water to seep inside and overtime damage the integrity of your roofing system.

A reputable roofing company can help you document the damage, determine the cause of the blistering, and even help you make the right installation and product choices to avoid these types of problems in the future, whether by ensuring one Proper attic ventilation or selection of a good quality product as a preventive measure.
