1. Avoid trapped air

4. Use water that has been treated with a low level of dissolved sulfate

Using water with a low level of dissolved sulfate is another way to prevent concrete failure. You see, metal ions (especially iron or steel) can cause rust to form in your concrete mix, making it vulnerable and prone to cracking.

The easiest way to do this is to use deionized water instead of tap water. If this is not available, try using water with a low level of dissolved sulfate. This will prevent the metal ions from settling in your concrete mix, resulting in an overall stronger material.

5. Do not use aggregates with high silicon content in areas of high humidity

Using silicate aggregates in areas with high humidity can cause concrete failure. This is because the aggregates absorb moisture from the air, which over time will cause your material to crack.

For example, if you build a sidewalk or patio in a high humidity area like Louisiana and use this type of aggregate without a waterproof coating, you could get a rude awakening.
