Amazing! How to Measure for New Windows
Information about How to Measure for New Windows
Since windows don’t need to be replaced very often, not many people know how to get new ones in due course. This is why there are so many companies out there ready to help with this process, from ordering replacement windows to actually installing them. However, you should know how to measure your existing windows. It may sound like an easy task, but there are a few important things you need to know to make sure you are all of the correct measurements when measuring for new windows.
Width, height, depth and rectangle
When taking measurements for new windows, the three most important dimensions are the width, height and depth of your existing windows. Many people might just think of measuring the width and height, but the depth can vary with different window styles so it is important to measure this too. Another important measurement that should be made is the rectangular shape of your window opening.
For the width, Use a tape measure or pull-out slide to measure the window opening from each side mullion of the window. Be sure to measure from the surface of the posts or frame, not the short extensions that hold the window in place. You don’t want to measure off the trim strips as this won’t give you the exact number you need. Measure the top, middle, and bottom window openings. Use the smallest dimension as the width.
For the height Make sure you measure from the top of the window sill closest to the inside of the window to the top of the window opening. Again, take three measurements: one on the left side, one in the middle, and one on the right side of the window. Use the smallest of these three height measures to order the window.
For the depth Measure the depth between the two stops that extend in front of the window frame. Make sure that there is at least a 3 ¼ inch opening between the inside of the window molding and the outer blind stop molding. If the depth is less, tell the company you are ordering from in case you need to specially order your windows. Try to measure at the shortest point, but you don’t have to measure in three places like you did for the width and height.
Check that the window opening is rectangular. Measure the window opening from the upper left corner to the lower right corner. Then measure the distance from the opposite corners top right to bottom left and compare with the first measurement. If these lengths are not the same, your window opening is neither square nor rectangular. In this case, you should inform the manufacturer of the new window that the opening is “toothed” and inform them of these dimensions.
The third time is the charm
Due to the regular occurrence of nature, a lot of movement can happen in the structure of your house. That is why it is very important to make three different measurements for width and height. If you don’t measure on each side and in the middle for the width and height, you may end up with a window that is too big for the space available. After you have taken all of the measurements, be sure to use the smallest of these measurements as it is easier to fill in extra space than to take out part of the wall.
Measuring your windows can be an important task, and even if you hire someone else to do it, you can make sure it is done correctly. The right window size can make a huge difference in keeping the summer heat and cold winter weather out and reducing your energy bills.
