the Procedure i use for pouring a concrete floor for a garage is:

  1. Order concrete from a ready-mixed concrete company
  2. Determine the level of the concrete floor with a laser level
  3. Mark the degree on the walls and capture chalk lines for degrees of circumference
  4. When a concrete truck shows up, mix the concrete to a workable slump
  5. Start pouring the concrete as close to your slope lines as possible (pour one section at a time)
  6. Use the laser to set the concrete floor in the center of the garage (a wet pad)
  7. May like to make the concrete float to match your chalk lines around the perimeter
  8. Start by leveling the concrete with a screed using your mag floating pads
  9. After the screed level, smooth the surface with the Bull Float
  10. Repeat for each section until you finish pouring the garage floor

The time it takes to water your garage floor depends on your level of experience and how big or small your garage floor is.

Watch us how we water this garage floor in 17 minutes

The size of the garage floor we are pouring in the video is 24 ‘x 24’. I was hired to just pour the floor and finish.

I wasn’t hired to prep the gravel or install a poly vapor barrier or install reinforcement. The general contractor was responsible for this stuff.

We used 4000 psi concrete with fiber fabric (rebar) and the concrete contained a water reducer. The water thinner is a chemical that is added to the concrete that allows you to pour a looser mixture without adding water.

How thick does a garage floor have to be?

That depends on what you are using the garage for. Most apartment garage floors like this one are 4 “thick.

As long as the substructure has very good compaction, a 4 “thick floor is sufficient for most cars and light commercial vehicles.

For heavier vehicles, a 6 “thick garage floor would be better suited to support larger trucks and utility vehicles.

How to prepare the floor for a concrete floor in a garage?

The best way to prepare the underground for a garage floor is with gravel. Remove grass, loom, clay, or dirt that is not gravel.

Install 2 “minus gravel for the subsoil and compact it in 8” elevators. Once you are within 6 “of final sub-construction height, switch to 3/4” ballast for the remaining 6 “.

This smaller gravel is easy to rake and level. Use a laser level to check your slope, rake, compact and level the gravel to your final slope.

How deep you need to go with the gravel will depend on where you live, your existing soil conditions, and your existing landscape.

If you live in an area with high levels of freeze-thaw conditions, use a deeper gravel base than the southern United States. Check with your local code enforcement agency to find out what works best in your area.

Can you pour a garage floor in sections?

Yes, you can pour a garage floor in sections. If you feel like you can’t pour all of the garage floor at once, shape it in smaller sections.

Use 2×4 or 2×6 to make section at a time and just pour those first. The next day, strip off the forms and form the next section.

I would use a 1/2 “masonry drill bit to drill holes in the previous section and peg the sections together. Drill about 3” into the concrete and about every 2 ‘in the middle. Use 1/2 “dowels or rebar about 12” in length for your pins.

Hammer them in just before you pour the new section. These pins prevent one section from moving higher or lower than the other. They will help keep the joints nice and tight while the concrete hardens.

FINALLY:

You may not be able to water your garage floor in 17 minutes, it really doesn’t matter. However, the method we use to water our garage floors gives you an idea of how to water your garage floor a little faster.
