This page explains the basic steps required to stamp a concrete patio.

There are some videos out there that will show you the entire stamping process from start to finish.

I also have more in-depth training if you want to learn how to stamp your own concrete.

The course includes many “on the job” training videos where I break down all the details and steps I use when I and the crew are stamping a concrete deck.

You can watch the course here.

The course will teach you what I do in the video below:

The versatility of concrete is what makes a concrete patio such a great choice. An embossed concrete patio can be shaped into any shape to suit your needs or creative ideas.

There are so many textures, colors, and die cut concrete patterns to choose from that it will be a challenge deciding which is your favorite. One of the most attractive advantages of a concrete terrace is the wide range of colors.

You can choose colored concrete, a shake on color hardener, concrete stain, or a concrete dye. These can also be used together to create many color variations.

HERE ARE SOME GREAT REASONS TO CHOOSE STAMPED CONCRETE FOR YOUR NEW TERRACE:

  1. The concrete can be punched and textured to look like stone, brick, wood, and tile to name a few, at a fraction of the cost of paving stones.
  2. Concrete can be made into any shape to suit your gardening needs.
  3. Concrete is very durable and can withstand a wide variety of weather conditions.
  4. By using stains, dyes, and colored concrete, you can achieve a look that will suit your home or landscape.
  5. With all of the concrete stamps available, your patio isn’t going to look like your neighbors.
  6. Staining and sealing a wooden deck every year is a lot of work.
  7. You won’t have sand in the joints for weeds to grow through like paving stones do.
  8. You don’t have to worry about termites or the wood rotting and splitting.
  9. The aesthetics of embossed concrete add value to your home.
  10. Compared to wood, concrete is environmentally friendly.

Creating an outdoor space with a concrete deck will allow you to spend quality time with your family, entertaining friends with a BBQ, or relax in your own backyard after work.

Now we come to the 4-step process of how to stamp a concrete terrace

Step 1: pour the concrete terrace

If you want to learn how to shape and pour a concrete terrace, check out my course!

When pouring a concrete patio to be stamped, I usually add a darker gray paint so the concrete doesn’t dry white / light gray. I use that UNI-MIX integral concrete dye by Butterfield Color.

Here are the steps to follow when pouring a concrete patio:

  1. Pour and rake concrete as level as possible
  2. likes the edges
  3. screed the concrete
  4. Bull float concrete

For a more in-depth explanation of how to pour a concrete terrace, watch the video below:

Step 2: stamp the concrete terrace

The most important step in punching concrete is knowing when to start.

This is one of the most valuable things you will learn from my training videos.

You can’t start too early or you sink in too much and you have low spots all over the place and you can’t start too late or you can’t make a good impression with the stamps.

After you like and Edge the concrete terrace, we can start, distribute the release agent. Make sure the concrete is completely covered, but don’t create a thick layer.

Next, use a structured roller and go around the edges to make sure all the spots on the patio are evenly textured. Now you can start stamping!

Step 3: Wash & clean the punched concrete

After waiting a full 24 hours after stamping the concrete patio, now is the time to remove all of the release agent from the concrete. All you need is:

Start by washing the entire concrete terrace, removing as much release agent as possible.

Next, mix a 5 gallon bucket of water and 4-5 ounces of Dawn dishwashing detergent together and pour the soapy water onto the patio.

Scrub and brush the soapy water firmly over the surface of the patio. This is to remove the excess powder that you used for stamping.

Finally, wash the terrace again with a pressure washer to remove the rest of the release agent, dirt and soap from the punched concrete.

I usually add some saw cuts to the patio to avoid cracking. (also in training)

The video below shows exactly how we clean an embossed concrete patio.

Step 4: sealing your punched concrete

Lastly, to make sure the punched concrete is protected, make sure you seal the concrete patio.

*** Make sure to wait another 24 hours after cleaning the concrete before sealing. If a rainstorm occurs between the 24 hours you clean and seal the concrete, you will need to wait an additional 24 hours for the concrete to completely dry before you seal it.

When it comes to sealing punched concrete, I always use that FOUNDATION AR 350 Sealing. This seal is perfect for newly punched concrete and also for old punched concrete! To spread the sealer I use a Stainless steel concrete sprayer with an open head.

The video above also shows how to seal a decking made of stamped concrete.

How to clean concrete punches

Cleaning your concrete stamps is very important to ensure they last a long time and always produce the best looking stamp.

All you need to clean the stamps are:

First, use a pressure washer to wash off as much release agent from the stamps. Then, put Dawn dishwashing detergent in a bucket of water and use that and the broom to scrub off the rest of the release agent and other dirt / concrete.

how much does punched concrete cost?

In general, stamped concrete typically costs between $ 15 and $ 20 per square foot.

There are many different factors that go into pricing stamped concrete. For a more precise price, therefore, contact your local stamped concrete maker.
