Patent glazing specialists Howells were selected to fabricate and install a new roof for the ‘Winter Garden’, a large conservatory and part of the formal entrance to Doxford House, a former derelict Georgian manor house.

“I searched the internet for a suitable rafter glazing system and came across Howells,” says Gary Lax, site manager at Doxford House. “I was impressed with their skills and abilities and their experience with historic buildings.”

Howells HGR1 aluminum rafter system was chosen as a personable yet high-performing solution for the new conservatory roof.

The roof, glazed with 11.5mm clear molded laminated toughened glass, required additional support to comply with building codes. The reinstated C24 timber rafters were laminated to a steel subframe onto which the HGR1 aluminum rafter bars were mounted.

The aluminum rafter bars are powder-coated in anthracite gray (RAL 9023). The roof was finished off with custom pressed metal in the hips and ridges.

“It has been a pleasure working with Howells. They were quick, reliable and efficient. We are very pleased with the quality and overall aesthetics of the conservatory roof. It has helped restore some of the conservatory’s long-lost grandeur.”
