ABSTRACT:

Marine biofouling is an ancient problem that has far-reaching implications for many marine activities. The development of environmentally friendly and long-term antifouling coatings for shipping remains a major challenge in the maritime industry and involves many factors: hydrophobicity, surface roughness, electrostatic interactions and the use of non-stick / biocide molecules. We have developed a novel antifouling epoxy paint that is doped with halloysite clay nanotubes (HNTs) as nanocontainers. HNTs have been loaded with two environmentally friendly antifouling molecules, sodium salicylate and N- (2,4,6-trichlorophenyl) maleimide, which can drastically reduce bacterial adhesion. The dispersion process of the nano-carriers in the paint has been optimized so that an efficient antifouling effect is achieved with the incorporation of small amounts of loaded HNTs. The use of 10% by weight of loaded HNTs in paints drastically improves the antifouling properties of the material by preventing the accumulation of Vibrio natriegens marine bacteria, which promises broad applications for the protection of ship hulls.
