ABSTRACT:

Repairing damaged cement structures is an important area of ​​civil engineering with dramatic structural and economic implications. Of all available repair materials, magnesium phosphate cements (MPCs) are widely used for their quick setting and hardening, low shrinkage, and excellent adhesion to aged concrete surfaces. In this work a new material made of MPC doped with halloysite nanotubes was developed for the repair of cement-based structures, which are of particular cultural and historical interest. Halloysites were included in the composite for two reasons: I) to improve the mechanical properties of MPCs; ii)to provide slow release of active molecules. Here halloysites have been loaded with an antimicrobial agent, sodium salicylate, to achieve anti-fouling protective properties. The composites were thoroughly characterized in order to obtain a complete overview of the physicochemical properties of the repair material and the effect of the inorganic nanotubes using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, porosimetry and mechanical testing. The incorporation of halloysites in MPCs improves the handling and the mechanical properties of the cements and enables the release of active molecules from the cement matrix. Some preliminary applications of the composite were done in a real world case study which showed that it can be used effectively for crack repair and that using halloysites as nanocarriers provides additional specific protection through the slow release of antifouling molecules from MPCs.
