Information about New Construction Startup, PLOT, Announces Backing
PLOT (https://www.getplot.com/), a comprehensive construction communications platform, this week announced its pre-seed investment partnership with Koch Industries and Indianapolis-based venture studio High Alpha Innovation. PLOT will be headquartered in Wichita, KS and is actively recruiting to fill key early roles.
Fragmented conversations that do not reach all relevant parties are central to an endemic communication problem in the construction industry. To better streamline the communication channels along the construction value chain, Koch teamed up with High Alpha Innovation to build PLOT and most recently led the startup’s pre-seed round. As corporate partners, Koch and High Alpha Innovation will drive PLOT’s vision of creating a comprehensive platform that could transform communication across the construction industry.
PLOT is led by Co-Founder and CEO Chris Callen, a veteran civil engineering entrepreneur and founder who has understood the processes – and imperfections – of construction team interaction for decades. Callen is the former CEO of the concrete company Builders Plus Construction and founded Grit Virtual, construction planning software, in 2017 which he has since sold. Most recently, Callen was Head of Customer Success at TraceAir Technologies, based in California.
“Building technologies, whether from an internal or external perspective, have often focused too much on documents and processes, and not on teams and the people in them,” notes Callen. “When building PLOT, we broadened our focus to the lifeblood of a construction site – the workers and their teams – who have never developed software that fully meets their communication needs.”
The focus of the PLOT approach is the application of proven communication technologies from the white collar industry, taking into account the special challenges of construction sites: These locations are often both contractually and geographically fragmented. If face-to-face conversations do not provide the right information to disseminate and meetings entail logistical challenges and duplicate information, the optimized communication technology from PLOT can contribute to rationalization and increased efficiency on the construction site.
“PLOT is a communication platform that industry needs. In today’s world, too many stakeholders are trying to juggle text messages, emails, phone calls, and messages generated through project-specific platforms, ”notes Travis Voss, director of innovative technology at Helm Mechanical. Echoes Dustin Burns, Vice President of Information Technology at McCownGordon Construction: “Construction software has come a long way in digitizing document and project management workflows, but there is still a massive lack of seamless and contextual communication at project locations. The way PLOT approaches this problem is really unique and has the power to change the industry. “
Jim DiAndreth, Managing Director at Koch’s Georgia-Pacific Ventures, added, “PLOT is uniquely structured to meet today’s communication challenges, and Chris’ leadership brings a level of expertise not found anywhere else in the industry. This is a big step forward for civil engineering and I can’t wait to see what PLOT will achieve. “
The original concept for PLOT was a result of an extensive collaboration between Koch and High Alpha Innovation that focused on supply chain challenges. After High Alpha Innovation’s sprint process forcing feature validated PLOT’s rollout, both teams nurtured the company’s early concept with feedback from construction suppliers, owners, and commercial contractors while searching for Callen in a nationwide CEO search.
“This venture studio approach enabled both Koch and our team at High Alpha Innovation to bring PLOT to market quickly. We are excited to work with us and look forward to helping the PLOT team scale together, ”said Elliott Parker, CEO of High Alpha Innovation.
While PLOT is developing its first product in this post-launch phase, the company is actively hiring talented engineers and engaging a core customer base to provide feedback on the platform. Interested owners, contractors and suppliers can apply for early access on the PLOT website.
