Amazing! Revit To IFC Reloaded
Information about Revit To IFC Reloaded
Some time ago I created an online conversion tool to convert Revit files to IFC. At the time, I wanted to experiment with Autodesk Forge’s Model Derivate API. I published this little service for free and took the free tier of my Autodesk Forge account to allow anyone to use it.
This solution was more successful than I expected and my free Forge credits were quickly used up. Since I can’t really fund the conversion of every Revit file on the job, I had to stop the service.
However, it seemed like a valuable solution to many people without a Revit license. So I’m building a new version of Revit To IFC, this time with an actual business model behind it.
This new version is now called RVT according to IFC and is an application built from the ground up. However, the main and only function remains the same, which is uploading a Revit file and reloading its conversion to IFC.
Behind the scenes, the application uses another service offered by Autodesk Forge. Instead of converting directly using the Model Derivative API, I use the Design Automation API to run my own Revit plugin for exporting IFC online.
This offers a more interesting cost structure based on when the switch is made. In addition, this enables access to the IFC export settings, which is not possible with the Model Derivative API. I have yet to implement this feature, it should come with my next version of the application.
I also use the Forge Data Management API to upload and download Revit and the resulting IFC. All Revit and IFC files are only saved for the duration of the conversion and then deleted. The entire back end is built with Azure Functions so that the solution can be easily built and deployed.
In this new version, each conversion costs one euro. They are sold as a bundle of 10 or 50 conversions at a fixed unit price. Even if the Design Automation API is the more cost-effective solution, I cannot offer a free contingent.
If you want to use your own Forge account to do the conversion, the entire solution is open source and available on GitHub. I hope you find this application useful. Don’t hesitate to share them with all of your ArchiCAD lovers who ended up receiving a Revit model from their contractor or engineer.
