Summer heralds a time of excitement, parties and more. So if you’re one of those people who love to throw parties, you’re probably preparing for the excitement of the season. While food, entertainment, and drinks are an important part of your gathering, don’t forget about your sanitation. In the summer, your lines can get overloaded, especially at large gatherings. So before you send out the invitations, use these tips to get your plumbing ready for your next summer party.

1. Fix leaks in the toilet

You don’t have to see water around the bottom of the toilet for a leak to exist. In most cases, the biggest leak is one you don’t even see: it’s around the flapper. While this may not be a problem during a gathering, or at least not in theory, you can find yourself with a higher water bill if you don’t fix this problem. In most cases, all you need is a new flapper, which is inexpensive and easy to install.

2. Clog your drains

If you have a gathering, your drains are the most likely source of an emergency. When clogged, your kitchen and bathroom sinks can overflow or even give off an unpleasant odor. However, these problems are not always easy to diagnose. Check the cabinets under the drains for mold or mildew as the clog may be in the drain below.

3. Place hair catchers in each drain

Speaking of clogs, your party guests could accidentally cause a plumbing disaster if you don’t place hair catchers down the drains. Food particles can get stuck in the drain and cause water to overflow. With a hair catcher you always make sure that you do not have a clogged drain.

4. Let guests use all of your bathrooms

When you are a party host, you typically allocate a single toilet for the party guests. However, using only one bathroom increases the likelihood of clogging, especially with repeated use of the toilet. If possible, open up another bathroom or two. Not only will you limit the chance of a clog, but you’ll also shorten the line for the suitor.

5. Check your outside faucet, irrigation and sprinklers

Is a summer gathering really a summer gathering without a bit of fun in the water? If you’re looking to entertain children or adults who are still indulging in their childhood inclinations, you need an outdoor water system that’s up to the task.

Before your guests arrive, replace any sprinkler heads that aren’t working, make sure your outside spigots are working, and inspect your sprinkler/irrigation system for any obvious leaks.
