Autodesk Revit 2021 was recently released on April 8th, 2020 and we’ve rounded up the top 21 upgrades we’ve all been waiting for. The main improvements Autodesk has focused on right now are productivity, collaboration, generative design, visualization, and data sharing.

The most anticipated upgrade, isn’t it? Yes, your wait is over, you can finally create sloping walls without having to use mass or model commands. In addition to placing walls, you can place slanted doors and windows to align with the slanted walls. Walls now have an instance parameter that allows you to select the element to tilt instead of vertical and specify an angle from vertical.

Generative design has been a buzzword for a few years now, now the time has come for it to go mainstream as it makes its way into the Manage tab in Revit. You can easily generate design alternatives in Revit based on your goals. There are 3 pre-built studies from Autodesk that you can use and you can also customize them to suit your project needs.

The appearance of schedules can be better customized with the new row strip function. This feature was introduced in Revit 2020.1, but the ability to see the stripes when placing these schedules on sheets was missing. However, with the release of Revit 2021, this is possible and gives you the ability to control the appearance of the schedule in the sheet using the schedule’s view menu. This is a welcome change, although we wish that Revit Schedules could do more.

Revit 2021 gives you the functionality to link PDF and images that you can unload if necessary. This function allows you to use pictures and drawings as reference for modeling without increasing the file size. Isn’t that the ideal scenario we all wished for?

The Revit user interface can now be modified according to your discipline and job role. This new feature allows you to create a user profile in Revit based on your settings. While this isn’t entirely new, and you can actually customize the Revit ribbon from the Settings, it’s good to see Autodesk is more focused on the UX.

The Path of Travel tool is a new addition to Revit and this version goes one step further. You can now change the start and end points while using the Travel Path tool, and you can also add or remove waypoints along a path. You can also control the visibility of the view to better understand the obstacles.

You can easily rotate section icons, tags, etc., and also use them to control text alignment for more readable annotations. This is a welcome change of pace, and it indicates that Autodesk pays attention to the little things too.

The filters in Visibility & Graphics now have a column for Activate Filters with a Yes / No condition in which you can choose whether or not you want to see the filter overrides in the particular view without having to remove them from the filter list. A real time saver for some use cases.

Visualization in Revit has now made a leap with this feature, as you can see the effects of the design in the authoring environment with the navigation tools to walk through the model with real-time lighting and texture controls. This was long due considering that most of the users had to use third-party plugins for visualization.

The models hosted in the cloud can now be navigated from the Revit home screen, with a better experience with project folders, sub-folder navigation and visualization. With this update, you can also directly access the folder on the BIM360 website with just one click.

Revit has focused heavily on structural modeling improvements and upgrades. The latest version of Revit now allows you to generate shape code 98 (the chair), which now gives contractors the ability to detail this level for the rebar. In addition, you can now overwrite each instance of rebar for rotation and hook lengths. We have personally experienced the frustration that this is not possible with older versions and we are celebrating this particular update.

The new Dynamo version 2.5 includes 10 new Dynamo nodes that mainly automate tasks such as joining geometries, pinning / removing and hosting Revit elements. With this update, steel connections and analysis play an important role in better design. Last but not least, this upgrade claims to reduce the processing time of large Dynamo scripts affecting the Revit model by 99.9%.

The cavities in the family are now supplied with type and instance parameters for visibility that can be controlled in the project environment. This is one of the major updates as the cutting geometry can now be mapped to a new type or instance parameter to use those parameters to see different cutting behavior of the cavity in the project.

Revit 2021 now has a special Ribbon tab for precast parts, located to the right of the Steel tab. It comes with different sections like Segmentation, Connections, Reinforcement, Fabrication, Configuration and Precast Updates Enabler. This functionality supports the various stages of precast workflows with advanced tools to create precast assemblies, drawings, and files sufficient for manufacturing.

Steel modeling in Revit 2021 becomes a breeze with the update to stiffeners, which can now be placed at one point or in multiple locations along beams and columns with the same connection tool. Is it time to ditch Advance Steel and use Revit entirely for steel? Maybe not yet.

Revit 2021 introduces a new discipline in the filter category in Revit. It comes with 26 new model categories and sub-categories. It also comes with 20 new note categories. These commands are useful for modeling and rendering bridges, models from Infraworks can be imported into Revit, and detailing for structural reinforcement, parts, assemblies, and sheet metal creation can be done in Revit.

Revit now shows single phase electrical panels in the panel diagram, electrical panel now shows the number of circuits as the number of poles. Phases in circuits can now be selected for switchboards.

Autodesk Inventor 2021 now offers AnyCAD functionality for Autodesk Revit 2021 for better coordination in projects. This update brings better interoperability between these two software for data and better link behavior.

The MEP worksharing in Revit 2021 now has better functionality for borrowing items when collaborating with the team. You can now borrow a single item in a connected system and make the changes without taking ownership of the aligned items.

P&ID models can now be integrated into Revit with BIM360, where the schematic information about the P&ID model would be visible in Revit and help with service modeling.

Take your BIM workflow to the next level with the help of the planBIM Revit plug-in. This plugin offers Autodesk® Revit® users various productivity improvements and acts as a tool for better BIM management. With the planBIM Revit plug-in, users can connect directly to their BIM data in the planBIM cloud.

Autodesk Revit 2021 is thus going to be a major update with the most anticipated features, improvements, and amazing new features. However, the article does not cover all the features of the new version. We had a great experience exploring the upgrades and hope you enjoy them too. Don’t forget to use the planBIM plugin with Revit 2021.
