When making your own concrete, it is important to use the correct concrete mix ratios to create a strong, permanent concrete mix.
Some basic Mixing ratios for concrete are 1: 2: 3, 1: 3: 3, 1: 2: 4. These mixing ratios are based on the proportions of cement: sand: stone in this order. The ratio you use will depend on what psi strength you need.
To make concrete, you need four basic materials:
- Portland cement – you can buy this in a 94 pound bag
- Sand – Coarse or fine works (coarse sand gives you a stronger mix)
- Aggregate (stone) You can use 3/8 “, 1/2” or 1/5 “stone for aggregate
- Water – Clean cold water is best.

What is a good concrete mix ratio for a slab?
One of the best concrete mix ratios for a slab is 1: 3: 3 (cement: sand: stone), this will produce a concrete mix of around 3000 psi.
This mixing ratio is excellent for a shingle slab, but is also suitable for most concrete terraces, foundations, steps and foundation walls.
Mixing water with cement, sand and stone forms a paste that envelops the stone and binds the materials together after the mixture hardens.
The strength of the concrete will depend on how much water you use to mix everything together.
Basically, this means that the more water you use to mix the concrete, the weaker the concrete mix (very liquid).
The less water you use to mix the concrete (somewhat dry but workable), the stronger the concrete mix will be.
Exact concrete mix ratios can be achieved by measuring the dry material with buckets or even a shovel.
3000 psi concrete mix ratio for 1 cubic yard
1: 3: 3 MIXING RATIO
To a. to produce 3000 psi cubic feet of concrete (27 cubic feet) the concrete mix ratio is:
- 517 pounds of cement or (234 kg)
- 1560 pounds of sand or (707 kg)
- 1600 pounds of stone or (725 kg)
- 32-34 gallons of water or (132L)
This mix ratio gives you a concrete mix that is strong, durable, and good for most concrete projects.
One cubic meter of concrete fills an area 8 feet wide, 10 feet long, and 4 inches thick, or 80 square feet if 4 inches thick.
At 6 “thick, one cubic meter of concrete fills 52 square feet, and at 5” thick it fills 65 square feet.
4000 psi concrete mix ratio for 1 cubic yard

To produce a cubic meter of 4000 Psi concrete, you need to adjust the concrete mix ratio to:
- 611 pounds of cement or (277 kg)
- 1450 pounds of sand or (657 kg)
- 1600 pounds of stone or (725 kg)
- 33- 35 gallons of water or (133L)
As you can see, it takes a little more cement and a little less sand to make this stronger concrete mix, which is great for driveways, pool decks, walkways, outdoor patios, and commercial garages.
Knowing the weight of the materials and the amount of water to use can help determine how much cement, sand, and stone to buy to complete your project.
For estimation purposes, you can make about 1 cubic yard of concrete with 5 1/2 94 pound bags of cement, 17 cubic feet of sand, and 18 cubic feet of gravel. (It takes about forty 80-pound bags of prepackaged materials (like Quikrete) to make 1 cubic yard of concrete.)
Or … 1 cubic meter of concrete takes about 7.15 bags of Portland cement, 0.48 cubic meters of sand, and 0.51 cubic meters of gravel.

How do you calculate a smaller concrete mix ratio?
If you need less than 1 cubic meter of concrete (or if a ready-made mix is not available), you can mix your concrete on site either by hand using the tools above, or with an electric concrete mixer like the one in the link above.
To make smaller batches of concrete, use the same proportions but in smaller quantities, replacing cubic feet with buckets. (For the mixing ratios given above, you would use 1 bucket of cement, 3 buckets of sand, 3 buckets of stone, and 1/2 bucket of water.)
With any batch size, the most important thing is to keep the proportions of ingredients the same. You can double or triple the batch size by simply double or triple the number of buckets of each ingredient you add to the mix.
What is the mixing ratio 1: 2: 3 for concrete?
The 1: 2: 3 mix ratio consists of 1 part cement, 2 parts sand, and 3 parts stone (plus some water) to make a concrete mix that you can use for almost any construction project.
The way you measure the ratio can be done in shovels, buckets, or wheelbarrows. As long as you’re consistent, you’ll get a good, strong mix.
In general, if the stone ratio is greater than the sand, this concrete hardens a little more than a ratio of 1: 3: 3. The difference lies in the workability of the concrete. The sand makes the concrete a little easier to work with. The less sand, the more rocky the mix will be.
Cool things you can make by mixing your own concrete
These bags basically have a concrete mix ratio of 1: 2: 4.
These concrete mix ratios are designed so that the concrete reaches its full strength at around 28 days of age.
Curing the concrete can be done by keeping it wet after the first day until the concrete is 7 days old.
Curing is an important step for the concrete to achieve its full strength after 28 days.
