water heater

Nothing is worse than coming home from a long day at work only to find you run out of hot water. It can be easy to come to different conclusions, but don’t worry. The problem might be easier than you think.

Here at Mr. Plumber, we are experts when it comes to water heaters. Here are a few things that might be wrong with your water heater.

No energy

If you have an electric water heater and it doesn’t produce hot water, then you might have a small electrical problem. First, check the circuit breaker and make sure it hasn’t tripped. If the breaker is on, try checking the power cord. Make sure it is plugged in properly and that the cable is not damaged.

Then look for the safety switch near or on the water heater’s thermostat. Not all water heaters are equipped with this switch. If you can’t find it, your water heater might not have one.

No gas or gas leak

If you have a gas water heater and it is not producing hot water then there could be a problem with the gas pipe that connects to the water heater. First, examine the gas pipe that is connected to your water heater. It will likely be yellow.

Then look for the following signs of a gas leak:

If you hear a hissing noise from the pipe, there is likely a crack in your gas pipe.

Bad smell

Gas leaks cause a terrible odor. If you smell like rotten eggs, you probably have a gas leak.

Unusually high gas bill

If your gas line seems normal, there could still be a leak somewhere. Keep an eye on your gas bill and if it is much higher than usual you could still have a gas leak.

If you suspect a gas leak is coming from your water heater or anywhere in your house, shut off the gas immediately. Then call a professional to investigate the problem further. Gas leaks can be dangerous, so don’t wait to call a mechanic.

Bad thermostat

The thermostat is an essential part of the water heater. While it has many functions, one of the most important things it does is control the heat of the water in the tank. The thermostat constantly adapts to your hot water needs, whether for your dishwasher or your shower. The thermostat is equipped with a built-in safety switch that switches off the thermostat if the water gets too hot.

Find your thermostat and make sure it is on. If it turns off repeatedly, your thermostat is likely to be defective. Unless you are an experienced electrician or plumber, you should call a professional to replace the thermostat.

Loose parts

If you find water leaking from a faucet, there may be something loosened on the water heater. If you see water coming from screws on the heating element or from a faucet, they likely need to be tightened. It is recommended to call a professional. But if you want to fix it yourself, turn off the water heater first. If water is leaking from the bottom of the water heater, you likely have a leak in the water heater itself.
